Meaning
Al-Maani means the Preventer, the Withholder: the One who prevents harm and withholds what He wills, always for the good of His servants.
Understanding the Name
After every prayer the Prophet ﷺ would say: Allahumma la mani‘a lima a‘tayta wa la mu‘tiya lima mana‘ta, “O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold” (Sahih al-Bukhari). What Allah withholds may be a protection we cannot yet understand.
Al-Maani also prevents harm from reaching His servants; many calamities pass us by without our ever knowing.
Effects and reflections
Whether we are given something or denied it, it is for our own good. Whoever realises this will be content with every gain and every loss; this is the quality of the righteous servants of Allah.
In every situation one should agree with the will of Allah and thank Him wholeheartedly. In happiness one says Alhamdulillahi ‘ala kulli hal, and in distress one also says Shukr Allah.
Treatment (Amal)
By reciting “Yā Māni‘” 172 times, differences with one’s spouse will end, disputes will be settled and family life will become peaceful.

Meaning
Al-Mughnee means the Enricher: the One who enriches His servants and makes them self-sufficient, materially and spiritually.
Understanding the Name
Al-Ghani is rich in Himself; Al-Mughnee makes others rich. “And that it is He who enriches and suffices” (An-Najm 53:48). Allah promises: “If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty” (An-Nur 24:32).
The greatest enrichment is contentment of the heart: the one whom Al-Mughnee enriches in his heart never feels poor, whatever he has.
Effects and reflections
Its effect is the same as that of Al-Ghani.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Mughnī” abundantly, beginning and ending with Durood, will, Insha’Allah, be blessed with self-sufficiency, both material and spiritual.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Ghani means the Self-Sufficient, the Rich: the One who is free of every need, while everything needs Him.
Understanding the Name
Allah says: “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy” (Fatir 35:15). He does not need our worship; it is we who need it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Richness is not having many possessions; true richness is the richness of the soul” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Whoever asks Al-Ghani is never refused for lack of means, and whoever is content with Him becomes rich in heart.
Effects and reflections
Allah is self-sufficient and free of every need. Some rich and selfish people spend their wealth only on themselves and do not care for those who are deprived. True believers should not seek anything from the creation, but should ask the Self-Sufficient Allah to fulfil their needs.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Ghaniyy” 1,071 times before sleeping will, Insha’Allah, become self-sufficient.
To be cured of physical and spiritual illness, recite it and blow on yourself; Insha’Allah, you will be relieved of your troubles.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Jaame means the Gatherer, the Assembler: the One who brings things together, anywhere and at any time.
Understanding the Name
Allah gathers what is scattered: the rain into clouds, people into families, and all of creation on the Day of Judgement. The believers pray: “Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt” (Al ‘Imran 3:9). He also gathers hearts that were divided, joining them in love.
Whoever has lost something, or whose family has been scattered, can call on Al-Jaame with hope.
Effects and reflections
The Creator will gather His creatures, and they will be assembled on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore we should prepare well for the Hereafter by doing good deeds. For this preparation Allah sent many Messengers with His Books, and finally the Prophet ﷺ with the Holy Qur’an. By following the teachings of the Qur’an we should make ourselves worthy of drinking from Al-Kawthar on the Day of Judgement, and influence those around us.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Jāmi‘” 25 times while gazing at the sky will, Insha’Allah, see the scattered members of his family come together soon.
If something is misplaced or lost, recite the following dua abundantly; Insha’Allah, it will soon be found:

Meaning
Al-Muqsit means the Equitable, the Just: the One who acts with perfect fairness and balance, and who gives the wronged their rights.
Understanding the Name
Qist means fairness and balance. Al-Muqsit sets everything in its proper measure and restores the rights of the oppressed. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly (al-muqsitin)” (Al-Hujurat 49:9), and on the Day of Judgement “We will set up the scales of justice” (Al-Anbiya’ 21:47).
The Prophet ﷺ said that the just will be on pulpits of light near Allah (Sahih Muslim). A believer who loves this Name is fair in his family, his business and his words.
Effects and reflections
Allah loves justice and truth and dislikes their rejection. A Muslim should hold to this quality of Allah in all his dealings and affairs, and should establish peace and security in the world. He should put an end to oppression and injustice, and strive hard to make the earth a better place. He should develop in himself the virtues of a righteous person by following Islam and the Prophet ﷺ, and so set an example that draws others towards Islam.
Treatment (Amal)
To accomplish any lawful task, recite “Yā Muqsiṭ” 211 times after every prayer until the aim is achieved.
Whoever recites it daily will be protected from the evil whispers of Shaytan.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Dhul Jalali wal Ikram means the Possessor of Majesty and Honour: the One who combines awe-inspiring greatness with generous kindness.
Understanding the Name
This Name appears twice in Surah Ar-Rahman: “And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour” (55:27), and “Blessed is the Name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour” (55:78). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hold fast to Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram” (Tirmidhi), encouraging us to call upon Allah by it often. After every obligatory prayer he would say: Tabarakta ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram.
Jalal (majesty) fills the heart with awe; ikram (honour and generosity) fills it with hope. The believer lives between these two.
Effects and reflections
It is a clear truth that Almighty Allah possesses all perfections and divinity; His Being alone is majestic and full of generosity. Islam stands upon this divine truth.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām” 1,103 times with sincerity before sleeping, beginning and ending with Durood, will, Insha’Allah, be blessed with honour and respect.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Maalik ul Mulk means the Owner of All Sovereignty: the eternal Possessor of the kingdom, who gives power to whom He wills and takes it from whom He wills.
Understanding the Name
Allah teaches us to say: “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honour whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good; indeed, You have power over all things” (Al ‘Imran 3:26).
Every king, government and owner holds power only on loan. Remembering Maalik ul Mulk frees the heart from fear of the powerful and from greed for position.
Effects and reflections
A Muslim should regard himself and all other creatures as the creation of Allah; this is the correct belief. Whoever believes in the lordship of Allah never fears any difficulty and never complains in grief. True worship is to be ready to follow every command of the Creator in every situation.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Mālikal-Mulk” 222 times after every prayer will be granted wealth and self-sufficiency, Insha’Allah.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Ar-Rauf means the Most Kind, the Most Compassionate: the One whose tender kindness and gentleness towards His servants is immense.
Understanding the Name
Ra’fah is a very gentle and tender form of mercy that removes hardship. “Indeed, Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful” (Al-Baqarah 2:143). Remarkably, Allah also describes His Messenger ﷺ with these words: “to the believers he is kind and merciful (ra’ufun rahim)” (At-Tawbah 9:128).
This is why it is said that this quality of Allah is reflected most beautifully in the Prophet ﷺ. Following his gentle character is the way to draw Allah’s kindness.
Effects and reflections
Allah is One, and His existence is unique. This quality of Allah is reflected most beautifully in the Prophet ﷺ. Those who seek kindness from Almighty Allah should develop a special love for Allah and the Prophet ﷺ, and for this they should follow the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ.
Treatment (Amal)
After reciting Durood 10 times, recite “Yā Ra’ūf” 297 times; this will remove the reciter’s anger.
If it is recited and blown upon a furious, enraged person, his anger will subside, Insha’Allah. The reciter will also gain the affection of all creation.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Afuww means the Pardoner: the One who wipes away the sins of those who sincerely repent, as if they had never been committed.
Understanding the Name
‘Afw means to erase completely, as the wind erases footprints in sand. Forgiveness (maghfirah) covers a sin; pardon (‘afw) removes it altogether. When Sayyida Aisha asked what to say if she found Laylat al-Qadr, the Prophet ﷺ taught her: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa‘fu ‘anni, “O Allah, You are the Pardoner and You love to pardon, so pardon me” (Tirmidhi).
Since Allah loves to pardon, the believer who pardons others draws Allah’s pardon upon himself.
Effects and reflections
A servant of Allah keeps falling into sins, knowingly or unknowingly. If this beautiful quality were not in Allah, he would be lost. It is one of the most wonderful gifts of Allah.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā ‘Afuww” 117 times after every prayer will, Insha’Allah, have all his sins pardoned.
From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Muntaqim means the Avenger, the Just Requiter: the One who takes retribution from those who persist in wrongdoing.
Understanding the Name
Allah is patient and forgiving, but He does not let injustice go unanswered forever. “Indeed, We will take retribution from the criminals” (As-Sajdah 32:22). His retribution is never unjust; it falls only on those who persist in oppression after being given every chance.
For the oppressed this Name is a comfort, and for everyone it is a warning never to wrong another person.
Effects and reflections
No one can harm Allah; it is the creatures who hurt one another and cause each other loss and damage. Allah has given His creatures a limited share of this quality: He has permitted them to take fair retribution, but it is better to leave the matter to Allah.
Treatment (Amal)
Those who are helpless and unable to defend themselves against wrongdoers should recite “Yā Muntaqim” 642 times after every prayer, until three Fridays have passed. Insha’Allah, Allah will soon deal with the enemy.
