Meaning
At-Tawwab means the Acceptor of Repentance, the Ever-Returning: the One who turns to His servants with mercy whenever they turn to Him in repentance.
Understanding the Name
Tawbah means returning. When a servant returns to Allah, Allah returns to him with forgiveness. The form tawwab means that He does this again and again. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves” (Al-Baqarah 2:222). The Prophet Adam (peace be upon him) was taught words of repentance, “and He accepted his repentance; indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful” (Al-Baqarah 2:37).
Every repentance is itself a gift from At-Tawwab: He first inspires the heart to turn back, then accepts its return.
Effects and reflections
Allah tells us to repent for our sins sincerely and with an open heart, and to regard Him as the Ever-Forgiving. Whoever repents with a true heart, Allah makes him His beloved. Allah says: “Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and those who keep themselves pure.”

Recite “Yā Tawwāb” 420 times after every prayer; Insha’Allah, one will be blessed with true repentance.
If it is recited and blown upon a tyrant, kindness will be gained from him.

Meaning
Al-Barr means the Source of All Goodness, the Kind Benefactor: the One who treats His creation with kindness and gentleness.
Understanding the Name
Birr means abundant goodness and kindness, as in birr al-walidayn, kindness to parents. The people of Paradise will say: “Indeed, it is He who is the Most Kind (al-Barr), the Merciful” (At-Tur 52:28).
A heart that loves Al-Barr becomes kind: to parents, to elders, to the weak and to all of Allah’s creatures.
Effects and reflections
A thoughtful person should recite “Yā Barr” abundantly so that he becomes obedient to Allah, respects his elders, and is polite and kind towards them. He will then gain honour, and this great quality of Allah will be reflected through him. Not to realise this divine truth is ignorance. One should act according to the knowledge one has; then, Insha’Allah, one will be blessed.

Recite “Yā Barr” 213 times every day before sleeping. Insha’Allah, this will free the person from sins such as drinking alcohol and adultery.
Whoever recites it and blows on himself will, Insha’Allah, be protected from difficulties, and love of this temporary world will leave his heart.

Meaning
Al-Muta‘alee means the Most Exalted, the Supremely High: the One who is far above all creation and every imperfection.
Understanding the Name
Allah is higher than anything the mind can imagine. He is “the Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Most Great, the Most Exalted” (Ar-Ra‘d 13:9). Whatever picture of Allah comes into the mind, He is above it: Subhanahu wa ta‘ala, “Glorified and Exalted is He.”
This Name purifies faith from every comparison of Allah with His creation, and fills the heart with reverence.

This beautiful Name shows that Allah is higher than the most advanced thought of any human being. He is above every action, manner, condition or idea that any creature may have.
Whoever wholeheartedly realises the effect of this quality will excel in this world and the Hereafter, will develop a special love for the Creator, and will influence those around him.

Whoever recites “Yā Muta‘ālī” 526 times after every prayer will, Insha’Allah, be relieved of all his difficulties.
A woman who recites it abundantly during her menstruation (without touching the Qur’an, as dhikr) will soon be relieved of her ailments, Insha’Allah.

Meaning
Al-Waali means the Governor, the Sole Ruler: the One who manages and exercises power over all things.
Understanding the Name
Al-Waali governs every affair of creation, from the movement of galaxies to the beating of a heart. “And there is not for them besides Him any protector (wal)” (Ar-Ra‘d 13:11). Unlike human rulers, His governance is never unjust, never absent and never confused.
The believer who knows Al-Waali obeys Him willingly, and finds peace in knowing that his affairs are in the best of hands.
Effects and reflections
One should accept Allah as the supreme Planner and Power, and be obedient to Him.
Whoever does this sincerely will be counted among the righteous, and whoever loves the Being and qualities of Allah will rise in rank in the universe.

To bring a disobedient person to obedience, recite “Yā Wālī” 58 times while keeping that person in mind.

Meaning
Al-Baatin means the Hidden, the Inner: the One whose essence is hidden from sight, yet who knows the innermost secrets of everything.
Understanding the Name
Our eyes cannot see Allah in this world, but He is nearer to us than ourselves. “You are the Hidden, there is nothing beneath (beyond) You” (Sahih Muslim). Al-Baatin knows the hidden thoughts and intentions of the heart.
This Name invites the seeker to work on his inner life, the heart, because that is where Al-Baatin looks: “Allah does not look at your forms and your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds” (Sahih Muslim).
Effects and reflections
Almighty Allah is known, yet He remains hidden. One must recognise one’s own weakness: one is always dependent on the Lord, and one’s hidden and unknown secrets are all open before Allah. Though He is hidden from us, nothing is hidden from Him.

Recite “Yā Bāṭin” 73 times after every prayer. By Allah’s will, this will create love and admiration for Allah in the heart, and His hidden secrets will open within it.
After offering three rak‘at of prayer, whoever sincerely recites the following will have his needs fulfilled, Insha’Allah:

Meaning
Az-Zaahir means the Manifest, the Evident: the One whose existence is clear through His signs, and who is above all things.
Understanding the Name
Allah is hidden from our eyes, yet nothing is more evident than Him, because every created thing points to Him. He is Az-Zaahir in His signs and Al-Baatin in His essence (Al-Hadid 57:3). The Prophet ﷺ said: “You are the Manifest, there is nothing above You” (Sahih Muslim).
For the seeker, this Name opens the eye of the heart to see the signs of Allah everywhere: in nature, in events and within himself.
Effects and reflections
To be truly manifest is a quality of Almighty Allah, not of His creatures. All of Allah’s creation depends on Him for its light (noor).

Whoever recites “Yā Ẓāhir” 1,117 times after the Ishraq prayer will have his heart and his sight illuminated with the light of Allah.

Meaning
Al-Aakhir means the Last: the One who will remain after everything else has perished, with no end.
Understanding the Name
“Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour” (Ar-Rahman 55:26–27). Al-Awwal and Al-Aakhir together mean that Allah surrounds all of time: He was before it began and will be after it ends (Al-Hadid 57:3).
Whoever remembers Al-Aakhir does not attach his heart to what is temporary. He invests in what will remain: his relationship with the Lord who remains.

The effect of this beautiful Name is similar to that of Al-Mu’akhkhir.

Reciting “Yā Ākhir” 812 times after every prayer makes up for the laziness and heedlessness of a whole lifetime.

Meaning
Al-Awwal means the First: the One who existed before everything, with no beginning.
Understanding the Name
Allah says: “He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He has knowledge of all things” (Al-Hadid 57:3). The Prophet ﷺ explained in a supplication: “You are the First, there is nothing before You; You are the Last, there is nothing after You” (Sahih Muslim).
Since Allah was there before every cause, the believer gives Him the first place in his heart and in his day: he begins his affairs with His Name and turns to Him first in every need.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever wishes to have a son should recite “Yā Awwal” 84 times after every prayer.
If a traveller recites it 1,000 times on Friday, he will return to his homeland safe and sound.

Meaning
Al-Muakkhir means the Delayer, the One who holds back: He postpones and puts back whomever and whatever He wills, according to His wisdom.
Understanding the Name
This Name is the partner of Al-Muqaddim. Allah delays punishment to give people time to repent, and sometimes delays a blessing because something better is waiting. “And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. If He were to seize them for what they earned, He would have hastened the punishment for them” (Al-Kahf 18:58).
Knowing Al-Mu’akhkhir brings patience: a delayed answer to a dua is not a refusal, but part of a wiser plan.
Effects and reflections
This beautiful Name has an effect similar to that of Al-Muqaddim. On the Day of Resurrection the whole universe will come to an end; only the One who remains after all will last. He will ask:
لِمَنِ الْمُلْكُ الْيَوْمَ
“To whom belongs the kingdom this Day?” and He Himself will answer, since no one else will be left to reply: “To Allah, the One, the Prevailing” (lillahil Wahidil Qahhar, Ghafir 40:16).

By reciting “Yā Mu’akhkhir” 857 times after every prayer, one will soon be blessed with sincere repentance.

Meaning
Al-Muqaddim means the Expediter, the One who brings forward: He advances whomever and whatever He wills, in rank, in time and in nearness to Him.
Understanding the Name
Allah brought some Prophets and people forward in rank, and He advances some events and delays others, all with perfect wisdom. Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu’akhkhir are known from the Prophet’s own supplication: Antal-Muqaddimu wa antal-Mu’akhkhiru, “You are the One who brings forward and the One who holds back” (Sahih al-Bukhari).
Accepting this Name means accepting Allah’s timing: what He brings forward could not have come later, and what He delays could not have come sooner.
Effects and reflections
The Sufis often quote the saying: “I was a hidden treasure and I loved to be known, so I created creation.” The detail of this meaning is reflected in this beautiful Name of Allah.

Whoever wishes to become completely obedient and submissive to Allah should recite “Yā Muqaddim” 159 times after every prayer.
During jihad, its continuous and sincere recitation leads to victory, increases courage and protects against the enemy.
