Meaning
Al-Muqtadir means the All-Powerful, the Omnipotent: the One with complete authority and perfect command over everything.
Understanding the Name
Al-Muqtadir comes from the same root as Al-Qadir, but in a stronger form, expressing the fullness and constant exercise of Allah’s power. The righteous in Paradise will be “in a seat of truth, near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability (Malikin Muqtadir)” (Al-Qamar 54:55).
A person who senses the power of Al-Muqtadir stops fearing the powerful people of this world, and instead fears displeasing the One who controls them all.
Effects and reflections
This blessed Name has the same effect as Al-Qadir, but it is even more powerful.

Recite “Yā Muqtadir” 755 times on waking from sleep; Insha’Allah, you will be freed from difficulties.

Meaning
Al-Qadir means the All-Able, the Capable: the One who has full authority and can do anything He wills, whenever He wills.
Understanding the Name
Nothing is difficult for Al-Qadir. When He wills something, He only says to it “Be”, and it is (Ya-Sin 36:82). The phrase wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in qadir, “and He has power over all things”, is repeated throughout the Qur’an.
The believer does not despair, because his Lord is able to change any situation, and he does not become arrogant, because whatever ability he has was given to him by Al-Qadir.

Along with knowledge and wisdom, ignorant man also desires power. It is an undeniable fact that everyone depends on Allah, and He alone suffices for all. Allah alone is Wahid (One) and Samad (Self-Sufficient); no one else holds this authority. To see oneself as one who seeks Allah’s mercy and help is the right path.
Treatment (Amal)
Reciting “Yā Qādir” 110 times after offering two rak‘at of nafl prayer will cause one’s enemies to be humbled.
Reciting it 416 times and blowing on oneself will make the task one has undertaken easy, Insha’Allah.

Meaning
As-Samad means the Eternal Refuge, the Self-Sufficient: the One who needs nothing, while everything turns to Him in need.
Understanding the Name
As-Samad is mentioned in Surah Al-Ikhlas: “Say, He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge” (Al-Ikhlas 112:1–2). The Prophet ﷺ said that Surah Al-Ikhlas is equal to one third of the Qur’an. Everyone, rich or poor, ruler or servant, depends on As-Samad, but He depends on no one.
When the believer turns to As-Samad in his needs, he is freed from humiliating himself before people.
Effects and reflections
Allah is free of every need, while His creation is always in need and seeks His help. Accepting this is Tawheed.
To associate partners with Allah is shirk.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Ṣamad” 445 times in sajdah (prostration) at the time of sahar (the last part of the night, before dawn) will, Insha’Allah, become self-sufficient and independent of all of Allah’s creation.

Meaning
Al-Wahid means the One, the Unique: the One who has no partner or equal in His being, His attributes or His commands.
Understanding the Name
Tawheed, the Oneness of Allah, is the foundation of Islam. Allah says: “Your God is One God; there is no god except Him, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” (Al-Baqarah 2:163). Al-Wahid often appears with Al-Qahhar, the Prevailing (Ar-Ra‘d 13:16).
A heart that knows Al-Wahid becomes united: it no longer runs after many masters, but serves One Lord, and so it finds peace.
Effects and reflections
Whoever knows and accepts the Oneness of Allah is influenced by it himself, and influences others too.
The whole universe testifies to the Oneness of Allah. To worship false deities means to associate partners with Allah, which is kufr (disbelief).
Treatment (Amal)
If “Yā Wāḥid” is written and kept with oneself, the person will gain lawful (halal) provision and will become righteous.
Whoever recites it 30 times after every prayer will be loved by all creatures and will have no fear of them.

Meaning
Al-Majid (Al-Maajid) means the Noble, the Illustrious: the One of perfect excellence and generosity.
Understanding the Name
Al-Maajid is close in meaning to Al-Majeed: both come from majd, glory joined with generosity. Al-Maajid emphasises the nobility and richness of Allah’s giving: He gives generously and His gifts never run out. Allah describes His Throne as glorious (Al-‘Arsh al-Majid, Al-Buruj 85:15).
Turning to Al-Maajid in seclusion, with longing, is a way for the seeker to taste the nearness of his Lord.

Whoever knows and accepts Allah as the most excellent and honourable One must submit himself completely to Allah and always seek His help.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites this beautiful Name in seclusion, abundantly and with such devotion that his heart is overcome with joy, will soon witness the light (noor) of Allah, Insha’Allah.

Meaning
Al-Wajid means the Finder, the Self-Sufficient: the One who lacks nothing, and who finds and attains whatever He wills, at any time.
Understanding the Name
The root w-j-d means to find. Nothing is ever lost to Al-Wajid and nothing is beyond His reach; He never has a need that goes unmet. Whatever He wants already exists for Him. For the seeker, finding Allah is the greatest wealth: whoever finds Him has lost nothing, and whoever loses Him has found nothing.
The Sufis also use wajd (from the same root) for the spiritual joy that comes over the heart in remembrance, a taste of having “found” one’s Lord.
Effects and reflections
Allah is closer to us than our jugular vein (Qaf 50:16). We cannot go far from Him, we cannot cancel His influence over us, and we cannot leave His domain. We should hold Allah in reverence; reciting “Yā Wājid” while eating brings freedom from illnesses.

The recitation of “Yā Wājid” creates strength and light (noor) in the heart, Insha’Allah. (It may also be recited while eating, as mentioned above.)

Meaning
Al-Qayyum means the Self-Subsisting, the Sustainer: the One who exists by Himself, needing nothing, and who holds up and maintains the entire universe.
Understanding the Name
Everything depends on Al-Qayyum to continue existing for even one moment, while He depends on nothing. This Name comes together with Al-Hayy in Ayat al-Kursi (Al-Baqarah 2:255), in Al ‘Imran 3:2 and in Ta-Ha 20:111: “And faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer.” Many scholars have said that these two Names together may be the Greatest Name (Ism-e-A‘zam).
Whoever relies on Al-Qayyum finds stability: the One who holds the heavens in place can hold his life together.

We know that the entire universe exists only because of Allah, who holds everything. Everything continues to exist because of Allah.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever seeks strength and divine light (noor) should recite “Yā Qayyūm” constantly. It is recommended to recite it 167 times after every prayer.

Meaning
Al-Hayy means the Ever-Living: the One whose life is perfect, without beginning or end, who never sleeps or tires, and who sustains everything.
Understanding the Name
Every living being received its life from Allah and will lose it, but Al-Hayy lives forever. Ayat al-Kursi begins: “Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep” (Al-Baqarah 2:255). The Prophet ﷺ used to call upon Allah in difficulty with the words: Ya Hayyu ya Qayyumu bi-rahmatika astaghith, “O Ever-Living, O Sustainer, by Your mercy I seek help.”
Placing trust in someone who will die is placing trust in something temporary. “And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die” (Al-Furqan 25:58).
Effects and reflections
Allah is the One who lives forever. It is often said that the lines on the right and left palms of a human being resemble the numerals 81 and 18, which together make 99.
A human being reflects the 99 qualities of Allah, and is the best of Allah’s creation. The one whose conscience is alive and whose heart holds iman is truly successful.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever writes “Yā Ḥayy” 3,000 times daily on a ceramic plate (with saffron and rose water), dissolves it in water and drinks it, and recites it 29 times after every prayer, will, Insha’Allah, be rewarded.

Meaning
Al-Mumeet means the Bringer of Death: the One who has created death and who takes life at its appointed time.
Understanding the Name
Life and death are both in Allah’s hands: “It is He who gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things” (Al-Hadid 57:2). Allah “created death and life to test you, which of you is best in deed” (Al-Mulk 67:2). The Prophet ﷺ advised us to remember often “the destroyer of pleasures”, meaning death.
For the Sufis, this Name also points to the “death” of the ego: the lower self (nafs) must be subdued so that the heart can truly live. This is why the treatment below is for controlling the nafs.
Effects and reflections
Our life depends on the will of Allah; if He wills, we lose both life and its comforts.
Whoever knows that his destination is the Hereafter and that death cannot be avoided welcomes it calmly when it comes. Such a person is happy and content in every situation, saying: Alhamdulillahi ‘ala kulli hal, “Praise be to Allah in every condition.”
Treatment (Amal)
A person who cannot control his inner self (nafs) should place his hands on his chest and recite “Yā Mumīt” 60 times (and continue) until he falls asleep. Insha’Allah, he will soon gain the strength to control his nafs.

Meaning
Al-Muhyee means the Giver of Life: the One who creates life, gives health and revives what is dead.
Understanding the Name
Allah gives life to the body, to the earth and to the heart. He brings the dry earth back to life with rain: “Look at the effects of the mercy of Allah, how He gives life to the earth after its death. Indeed, that is the Giver of life to the dead” (Ar-Rum 30:50). He also gives life to hearts through faith and remembrance. The Prophet ﷺ compared the one who remembers Allah and the one who does not to the living and the dead.
Remembering Al-Muhyee is a source of hope for the sick, for the grieving and for anyone whose heart feels lifeless.
Effects and reflections
When a person reflects on the fact that he is alive, he should recognise the effect of this quality of Allah: Allah is the One who gives life. He should remember the same whenever he sees any living creature. Insha’Allah, he will always be at peace.
Treatment (Amal)
If a sick person recites “Yā Muḥyī” after every prayer, beginning and ending with Durood, he will, Insha’Allah, be relieved of his illness. He will also be relieved of every sorrow he is caught in, and freed from every kind of burden.
