Meaning
Al-Muqeet means the Sustainer, the Nourisher: the One who provides every creature with the nourishment it needs, and who keeps watch over all things.
Understanding the Name
The root q-w-t refers to daily food (qut), the nourishment that keeps a body alive. Al-Muqeet gives every creature its sustenance, physical and spiritual: food for the body, knowledge for the mind and faith for the heart. He also oversees and maintains all things: “And ever is Allah, over all things, a Keeper” (An-Nisa’ 4:85).
Recognising Al-Muqeet makes a person content. He knows that his strength each day is a gift, and he uses it in obedience to the One who gave it.
Effects and reflections
The servant of Allah who regards Allah as his Sustainer always finds Allah to be the source of his livelihood and his energy. He is at peace and content in every situation, and his heart says: Alhamdulillahi ‘ala kulli hal, “Praise be to Allah in every condition.”
When he regards Allah as the source of all he owns, he uses it to please Allah, as Allah commands:
“Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds” (Al-An‘am 6:162). The Prophet ﷺ is the one we must follow, because to follow the Prophet ﷺ is to obey Allah:
مَنْ يُطِعِ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ اللَّهَ
“Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah” (An-Nisa’ 4:80). As a result, the servant accepts Allah as the Creator, the King, the Lord and the Giver of knowledge, power and sustenance, and becomes absorbed in His praise and worship.
Treatment (Amal)
To achieve any good, recite “Yā Muqīt” 561 times and blow into an empty earthen pot. Then fill it with water and drink from it.
