Meaning
Al-Kareem means the Most Generous, the Noble: the One who gives abundantly without being asked, forgives readily and honours His servants.
Understanding the Name
Al-Kareem gives more than is deserved, keeps His promises and overlooks faults. Allah asks: “O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous?” (Al-Infitar 82:6). The Qur’an itself is called Qur’anun Kareem, a noble and generous Qur’an (Al-Waqi‘ah 56:77), because it gives endlessly to those who turn to it.
A person touched by this Name becomes generous himself: with his wealth, his time and his forgiveness.
Effects and reflections
People commit sins knowingly or unknowingly, yet Allah, Al-Kareem, does not punish them immediately. He gives them time to realise their mistake, repent and seek forgiveness. Allah says:
إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ
“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you” (Al-Hujurat 49:13). Allah wishes to bless mankind with everything:
“The colour of Allah, and who is better than Allah in colouring?” (Al-Baqarah 2:138). Is it not the duty of every person to let this quality of Allah show in himself?
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Karīm” 281 times every day before sleeping will be honoured by pious and righteous people.
