Meaning

Al-Baaqi means the Everlasting, the Ever-Remaining: the One who will last forever, after everything else has passed away.

Understanding the Name

“Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain (yabqa) the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour” (Ar-Rahman 55:26–27). “What is with you will end, but what is with Allah will remain” (An-Nahl 16:96).

Deeds done for the sake of Al-Baaqi also remain: “the enduring good deeds (al-baqiyat as-salihat) are better with your Lord” (Al-Kahf 18:46). This Name turns the believer’s effort towards what lasts.

Effects and reflections

By Allah’s command, everything changes with time and everything must come to an end. The cycle of life goes on, but every life ends in death. Only the Everlasting Creator, who controls the universe, will remain for ever and ever.

Meaning

Al-Badee means the Incomparable Originator: the One who creates wonders without any previous example.

Understanding the Name

Allah is “the Originator of the heavens and the earth; when He decrees a matter, He only says to it ‘Be’, and it is” (Al-Baqarah 2:117). Every snowflake, every face and every fingerprint is new and unique, a sign of Al-Badee.

Reflecting on this Name fills the heart with wonder, and with hope: the One who creates new things without a model can open a new way out of any difficulty.

Effects and reflections

The effect of this beautiful quality of Allah is visible in all His creatures: for example, the web of a spider, the nest of a bird and the inventions of human beings. The creation of the Almighty is itself a wonder, and He has made human beings Ashraf al-Makhluqat, the best of creation.

Meaning

Al-Hadi means the Guide: the One who shows the right path and gives the ability to follow it.

Understanding the Name

There are two kinds of guidance: showing the way, and enabling a person to walk on it. Allah gives both. “And sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and a Helper” (Al-Furqan 25:31). In every rak‘ah we ask: Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqim, “Guide us to the straight path.”

No one can guide himself; even the desire for guidance is a gift from Al-Hadi. So the believer asks for guidance constantly, and is grateful for it.

Meaning

An-Noor means the Light: the One who gives light to the heavens and the earth, and to the hearts of the believers.

Understanding the Name

Allah says: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth” (An-Nur 24:35). His light is the light of guidance as well as of creation: through it hearts see the truth. The Prophet ﷺ used to pray: “O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing…” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

The path of the mashaikh is a journey from the darkness of heedlessness to the light of remembrance; this Name is its goal.

Effects and reflections

Allah, the Beloved, is Himself unseen, yet He gives radiance to all His creatures. His light illuminates the sun, the moon, the stars and the entire universe. Our very sight is lit by the light of Allah.

Meaning

An-Naafay (An-Nafi‘) means the Benefactor, the Giver of Benefit: the One who brings goodness and benefit to whom He wills.

Understanding the Name

Every benefit we receive, from medicine that heals to advice that guides, works only because An-Nafi‘ allows it to. “And if He intends for you good, there is no repeller of His bounty” (Yunus 10:107). The Prophet ﷺ taught us to ask for “knowledge that is beneficial” (Ibn Majah).

Seeking benefit from Allah alone protects the believer from relying on people, and teaches him to be a source of benefit to others.

Effects and reflections

The Almighty Lord is the only true Benefactor; no one else can bring goodness. Just as Allah does not harm anyone without reason, He does not grant benefit without reason either. All of this is connected with our actions: sometimes as a consequence of our deeds, sometimes as atonement for our sins, and sometimes to raise us higher.

If the benefit Allah gives leads a person into sin, he becomes deserving of punishment; if he stays away from sin, it is a blessing; and if he excels, he rises in rank.

Whoever recites “Yā Nāfi‘” abundantly will gain benefit. Reciting it before beginning a task brings benefit in that task, and reciting it after suffering a loss gradually removes the effect of the loss.

Treatment using name ADH-DHAAR

Meaning

Adh-Dhaar (Ad-Darr) means the One who brings distress: He allows hardship and harm to reach whom He wills, as a test or for a greater good.

Understanding the Name

No harm can touch anyone except by Allah’s permission, and no one but Allah can remove it: “And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him” (Al-An‘am 6:17). The scholars teach that this Name should be mentioned together with An-Nafi‘ (the Benefactor), because Allah’s decrees of hardship are always joined with wisdom and mercy.

Trials purify sins, raise ranks and bring the servant back to his Lord. The believer meets them with patience, and turns to the same Lord for relief.

Effects and reflections

The distress that Allah creates for His servants may be for their improvement, or to test their patience. So one should remain patient, and be thankful to Allah even in distress.

Meaning

Al-Maani means the Preventer, the Withholder: the One who prevents harm and withholds what He wills, always for the good of His servants.

Understanding the Name

After every prayer the Prophet ﷺ would say: Allahumma la mani‘a lima a‘tayta wa la mu‘tiya lima mana‘ta, “O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold” (Sahih al-Bukhari). What Allah withholds may be a protection we cannot yet understand.

Al-Maani also prevents harm from reaching His servants; many calamities pass us by without our ever knowing.

Effects and reflections

Whether we are given something or denied it, it is for our own good. Whoever realises this will be content with every gain and every loss; this is the quality of the righteous servants of Allah.

In every situation one should agree with the will of Allah and thank Him wholeheartedly. In happiness one says Alhamdulillahi ‘ala kulli hal, and in distress one also says Shukr Allah.

Meaning

Al-Mughnee means the Enricher: the One who enriches His servants and makes them self-sufficient, materially and spiritually.

Understanding the Name

Al-Ghani is rich in Himself; Al-Mughnee makes others rich. “And that it is He who enriches and suffices” (An-Najm 53:48). Allah promises: “If they are poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty” (An-Nur 24:32).

The greatest enrichment is contentment of the heart: the one whom Al-Mughnee enriches in his heart never feels poor, whatever he has.

Meaning

Al-Ghani means the Self-Sufficient, the Rich: the One who is free of every need, while everything needs Him.

Understanding the Name

Allah says: “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy” (Fatir 35:15). He does not need our worship; it is we who need it. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Richness is not having many possessions; true richness is the richness of the soul” (Sahih al-Bukhari).

Whoever asks Al-Ghani is never refused for lack of means, and whoever is content with Him becomes rich in heart.

Effects and reflections

Allah is self-sufficient and free of every need. Some rich and selfish people spend their wealth only on themselves and do not care for those who are deprived. True believers should not seek anything from the creation, but should ask the Self-Sufficient Allah to fulfil their needs.

Meaning

Al-Jaame means the Gatherer, the Assembler: the One who brings things together, anywhere and at any time.

Understanding the Name

Allah gathers what is scattered: the rain into clouds, people into families, and all of creation on the Day of Judgement. The believers pray: “Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt” (Al ‘Imran 3:9). He also gathers hearts that were divided, joining them in love.

Whoever has lost something, or whose family has been scattered, can call on Al-Jaame with hope.

Effects and reflections

The Creator will gather His creatures, and they will be assembled on the Day of Resurrection. Therefore we should prepare well for the Hereafter by doing good deeds. For this preparation Allah sent many Messengers with His Books, and finally the Prophet ﷺ with the Holy Qur’an. By following the teachings of the Qur’an we should make ourselves worthy of drinking from Al-Kawthar on the Day of Judgement, and influence those around us.

Treatment (Amal)

Whoever recites “Yā Jāmi‘” 25 times while gazing at the sky will, Insha’Allah, see the scattered members of his family come together soon.

If something is misplaced or lost, recite the following dua abundantly; Insha’Allah, it will soon be found:

اللَّهُمَّ يَا جَامِعَ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ اجْمَعْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ ضَالَّتِي
