Meaning
Al-Haseeb means the Reckoner and the All-Sufficient: the One who keeps account of everything people do throughout their lives, and who is enough for everyone and everything.
Understanding the Name
The root ḥ-s-b gives two meanings. One is reckoning: “Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant” (An-Nisa’ 4:86). The other is sufficiency, as in Hasbunallahu wa ni‘mal wakil, “Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs” (Al ‘Imran 3:173), the words the believers said when they were threatened.
Whoever makes Allah his sufficiency needs nothing else, and whoever remembers that Allah will take account is careful with every word and deed.
Effects and reflections
Allah asks His servants: “Is Allah not sufficient for His servant?” (Az-Zumar 39:36), and the believer’s answer is “Yes.”
This beautiful Name invites us to reflect that Allah alone is enough for us; in every situation we must obey His command. To regard anything other than Allah as sufficient for oneself leads to kufr (disbelief).
This quality of Allah is enough to protect us from falling into kufr. Allah suffices us with everything, in this world and in the Hereafter.
Treatment (Amal)
To protect oneself from every evil, recite “Yā Ḥasīb” 91 times after every prayer for 40 consecutive days.
