Meaning
Al-Quddus means the Most Holy, the Most Pure: the One who is free from every fault, defect and shortcoming, and far above anything that does not befit His majesty.
Understanding the Name
The root q-d-s carries the meaning of purity and holiness. From it come the names Bayt al-Maqdis (the Holy House in Jerusalem) and Ruh al-Qudus (the Holy Spirit, Angel Jibreel). Allah mentions this Name in Al-Hashr 59:23 and Al-Jumu‘ah 62:1, where all that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies “the King, the Most Holy”.
Everything in creation has some weakness, need or imperfection; only Allah is perfectly pure. When we say Subhan Allah we declare exactly this. Reflecting on Al-Quddus inspires the believer to purify his own heart, intentions and actions, so that he becomes worthy of nearness to the Most Holy.
Effects and reflections
Whoever truly believes in Allah’s holiness will be protected from all evil influences.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever recites “Yā Quddūs” 118 times after the Maghrib prayer will, Insha’Allah, be protected and cured from all spiritual diseases.
