From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Haleem means the Most Forbearing, the Clement: the One who sees the disobedience of His servants yet does not hurry to punish them, giving them time to repent.
Understanding the Name
Al-Haleem has the full power to punish, but chooses patience and gentleness. The Qur’an often joins this Name with Al-Ghafur: “And know that Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing” (Al-Baqarah 2:235). If Allah punished people immediately for every wrong, not a single creature would remain on the earth (Fatir 35:45).
Hilm (forbearance) is one of the most beloved qualities in a believer. The Prophet ﷺ told one of his Companions that Allah loves two qualities in him: forbearance and deliberation. Remembering this Name helps a person control his anger and be patient with others.
Effects and reflections
The forbearance of a clement person blesses his surroundings with calm and dignity, and his companions share in that blessing. Whoever remembers Allah, who is everything to him, and reminds others of Him, will be counted among those of the best character.
The more a person keeps the company of a clement person and seeks his advice, the more his own heart is lit with forbearance. This was the way of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Today many who call themselves Muslims are far from forbearance; how, then, can they serve others?
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever writes this beautiful Name 99 times on paper with saffron, soaks it in water and drinks the water will, Insha’Allah, be protected from all calamities and loss, and will be blessed.
