Meaning

Al-Quddus means the Most Holy, the Most Pure: the One who is free from every fault, defect and shortcoming, and far above anything that does not befit His majesty.

Understanding the Name

The root q-d-s carries the meaning of purity and holiness. From it come the names Bayt al-Maqdis (the Holy House in Jerusalem) and Ruh al-Qudus (the Holy Spirit, Angel Jibreel). Allah mentions this Name in Al-Hashr 59:23 and Al-Jumu‘ah 62:1, where all that is in the heavens and the earth glorifies “the King, the Most Holy”.

Everything in creation has some weakness, need or imperfection; only Allah is perfectly pure. When we say Subhan Allah we declare exactly this. Reflecting on Al-Quddus inspires the believer to purify his own heart, intentions and actions, so that he becomes worthy of nearness to the Most Holy.

Meaning

Ar-Raheem means the Most Merciful, the Ever-Compassionate. Ar-Rahman describes the mercy that embraces all creation in this world; Ar-Raheem describes Allah’s special, lasting mercy for the believers.

Maulana Abdul Majid (Rahmatullah Alaih) quotes the following saying in his Tafseer:

الرحمٰن رحمٰن الدنیا، والرحیم رحیم الآخرۃ

That is, Ar-Rahman is the Merciful One of this world, and Ar-Raheem is the Merciful One of the Hereafter. The Qur’an says:

وَكَانَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِيمًا

“And He is ever Merciful to the believers” (Al-Ahzab 33:43).

Understanding the Name

Both Names come from the same root, r-ḥ-m, and they appear side by side in Bismillah. Scholars explain that Ar-Rahman points to the vastness of Allah’s mercy, while Ar-Raheem points to its continuity: a mercy that never stops, which Allah keeps for those who believe and turn to Him.

A believer who reflects on this Name never loses hope. However many mistakes he has made, the door of Ar-Raheem stays open to him through repentance and faith.

This Name manifests itself upon the believers, men and women alike. Its benefits cannot be gained without true faith in Allah.

Ar-Rahman

Meaning

Ar-Rahman means the Most Gracious, the Most Beneficent: the One whose mercy and kindness reach every being without distinction. He is the Giver of blessings and well-being to all creation, and His mercy in this world embraces all of mankind, believer and non-believer alike.

Understanding the Name

The Name comes from the Arabic root r-ḥ-m, which gives both the word for mercy (raḥmah) and the word for a mother’s womb (raḥim). Just as a mother cares for her child before it can ask for anything, Ar-Rahman provides for His creation before it asks. The Name is part of every Bismillah and opens the Qur’an itself (Al-Fatiha 1:1–3). It is used for Allah alone; no created being is called Ar-Rahman.

The air we breathe, the rain, the sunlight, our health and our provision are all signs of this mercy. Remembering this Name fills the heart with hope and gratitude, and teaches the believer to be merciful to others.

The signs and effects of this Name can be seen throughout the universe; everything available to us comes through this blessed Name. He is the Creator, the Sustainer, the Sovereign and the One worthy of worship. He gives life and knowledge, grants strength, answers the prayers of His creatures and is generous to all.

Ya-Allah

Meaning

Allah is the proper Name of the One True God. It cannot be translated into any other language, and it belongs to no one but Him. All of His other beautiful Names are attributes gathered within this one Name, which is why the saints (awliya) have called it the Ism-e-A‘zam, the Greatest Name. Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ attained all the blessings of this Name.

Understanding the Name

Allah says in the Qur’an: “Indeed, I am Allah; there is no god but Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance” (Ta-Ha 20:14). Every other Name, such as Ar-Rahman, Al-Malik and Al-Quddus, describes one quality of the Being whose personal Name is Allah. When a believer says “Allah”, he calls upon all of these qualities at once.

The heart finds its rest in this remembrance: “Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest” (Ar-Ra‘d 13:28). That is why the mashaikh of tasawwuf give the dhikr of the Name Allah a central place on the path of purifying the heart.

Effects and reflections

Everything in all the worlds is under Allah’s influence, and He alone has power over all. Every blessing and every kind of well-being can therefore be sought through this Name.

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to take Allah’s Name before every task and in every state: Bismillah (in the Name of Allah) when beginning, Alhamdulillah (all praise is for Allah) in gratitude, Astaghfirullah when seeking forgiveness, Inna lillah at a time of loss, Masha’Allah on seeing something good, and Fi amanillah when bidding farewell.

Treatment (Amal)

A person troubled by doubts and suspicions should recite “Yā Allāh” 77 times after every prayer (Salah). Insha’Allah, the doubts will vanish, and faith and contentment will take their place.

For an illness that seems incurable, recite “Yā Allāh” abundantly; by the will of Allah, the illness will be cured, Insha’Allah.
