From the teachings of Hazrat Maulana Shah Abdur Raheem Sahab Dard (Rahmatullah Alaih)
Meaning
Al-Ghafoor means the All-Forgiving: the One who forgives completely, and who covers and hides the faults of His servants.
Understanding the Name
While Al-Ghaffar stresses that Allah forgives again and again, Al-Ghafoor stresses the depth and completeness of His forgiveness: even the greatest sins can be wiped away. Allah says: “Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful” (Az-Zumar 39:53).
This Name gives the sinner courage to return. It also asks the believer to cover the faults of others, as he hopes Allah will cover his own.
Effects and reflections
Every creature is born with weaknesses; its life depends on water and air, and Allah, by His power, keeps it safe. In the same way, every human being is born with various weaknesses. Allah keeps them covered, and forgives people when they repent and seek forgiveness from Him.
When a servant of Allah, drowned in many sins, calls out “Yā Ghafūr”, the All-Forgiving Allah forgives him and purifies him from all his sins. Keep reciting “Yā Ghafūr” and seek the forgiveness of Al-Ghafoor with a sincere heart.
Treatment (Amal)
According to a hadith, whoever says “Rabbighfir lī” (رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي, “My Lord, forgive me”) three times in sajdah will have his sins forgiven.
Reciting “Yā Ghafūr” in sajdah with sincerity and concentration, beginning and ending with Durood, will lead, Insha’Allah, to forgiveness of all sins. Allah will take the person under the shade of His forgiveness and purify him.
