Meaning
Al-Adl means the Utterly Just: the One who is perfectly fair in every decree and judgement, and who never wrongs anyone even by the weight of an atom.
Understanding the Name
Justice is the very nature of Allah’s actions. The Qur’an says: “Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, even the weight of an atom” (An-Nisa’ 4:40), and “Indeed, Allah commands justice and good conduct” (An-Nahl 16:90). Even when we cannot see the wisdom behind an event, we can be certain that Al-Adl has not been unfair.
A believer who loves this Name tries to be just in his own home, work and dealings, even with those he dislikes, because justice is closest to taqwa (Al-Ma’idah 5:8).
Effects and reflections
In today’s world, justice in its true sense has largely disappeared; people have seen that perfect justice is very hard to achieve. It was realised in the time of the Prophet ﷺ and his caliphs and Companions.
The full manifestation of true justice will be in the Hereafter. Today’s judge may be tomorrow’s accused, in a court where a person’s own limbs will bear witness against him. This is enough for anyone who fears the true Judge, Allah, to know how he should live.
Treatment (Amal)
Whoever writes “Yā ‘Adl” on 20 pieces of bread (roti) and eats them will, Insha’Allah, find that the creation becomes favourable and obedient to him.
